| Spencer Engineering is proud to be a
patron to the village of Villa Catalina in central
Nicaragua. Our support includes contributions to
programs that
help build homes for displaced families and
provide a daily meal to local children, as well as periodic trips to the village
for
hands-on assistance with construction.
The families of Villa Catalina are
victims of Hurricane Mitch that struck Nicaragua in
1998. Massive
flooding and mudslides that extended nearly ten miles
obliterated several farming villages; more than 3,000
were killed and thousands were left homeless.
The homeless were taken to El Limonal--literally, a garbage dump--where they endured
unimaginable hardship until a
group of volunteers from Buford, Georgia learned of their
desperate plight and began to raise funds to purchase land
where a new village could be built.
In 2004 construction of Villa Catalina
began. Volunteers helped the families build a
school and a childrens' feeding center; a farm cooperative and pig
farm were established so the villagers could support
themselves. In 2005 construction began on the
long-awaited permanent homes for each family; each 500
square foot home will cost about $3,300.
